Environmental Education

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community has a unique Environmental Education Program that is run by their Water Resources Program. The Environmental Educator, with help from the Water Resources Specialists and field technicians, has created a wonderful mirad of water quality-based educational outreach opportunities for the tribal community and the surrounding area.  The Environmental Educator, Kaia Smith, has worked with a variety of groups over the past two years, including the La Conner schools, Swinomish Daycare, Swinomish Birth-to-Six, Swinomish Recreation, and La Conner Boys and Girls Club.  In addition, Kaia gives presentations at local community events such as Swinomish Earth Enhancement days, Spartina Dig days, Penn Cove Water Festival, and various different gatheringsThe Environmental Educator works with Tox in a Box(c)(r), an educational toolkit created by the University of Washington that specializes in teaching the basics of toxicology.  Kaia also uses EnviroScape(c), a watershed module that demonstrates how water quality is affected by pollution and industry.   Lead is also an environmental issue that affects the local community.  Kaia employs numerous lead educational lesson plans and activities.

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is federally recognized and operates under Constitution and Bylaws adopted in 1936 pursuant to the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934.

The Swinomish Tribe is committed to improving the lives and well being of the tribal members through social and cultural programs, education, economic development, and resource protection.

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is located on Fidalgo Island (gateway to the San Juan Islands) in Skagit County of Washington State about 70 miles north of Seattle. The Planning Office is located across the Swinomish Channel from the town of LaConner.
