Disaster Planning and Emergency Response

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community participates in regional emergency planning efforts as a member of the Skagit County Local Emergency Planning Committee. The Tribe is currently developing plans to increase the capacity to prevent, prepare and respond to various types of emergencies on the Reservation, and also participates in oil spill practice exercises with the local refineries.

FEMA Multi-Jurisdictional Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan

The Tribe, along with the Upper Skagit Tribe, Skagit County, cities, Dike District 13, fire districts, and other special purpose districts has completed the first planning efforts conducted on a regional level to prepare for natural disasters. Because the Tribe has completed this plan, we are now eligible for grant funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to prepare for disasters.

Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan

As a voting member of the 8 Tribe/ 5 County Region One Homeland Security Committee, the Tribe has utilized homeland security funding opportunities to develop an emergency management plan, which will be completed this November.

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is federally recognized and operates under Constitution and Bylaws adopted in 1936 pursuant to the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934.

The Swinomish Tribe is committed to improving the lives and well being of the tribal members through social and cultural programs, education, economic development, and resource protection.

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is located on Fidalgo Island (gateway to the San Juan Islands) in Skagit County of Washington State about 70 miles north of Seattle. The Planning Office is located across the Swinomish Channel from the town of LaConner.
